The normally formal Council Room and adjacent Meeting Room were brightly decked out with gold balloons and set for afternoon tea for 40 people including the Mayors of Ampthill and Dunstable, Deputy Mayor of Houghton Regis and Deputy Chair of Central Bedfordshire Council, as well as local residents who had decided to come along.

Guests were greeted with a welcome drink of Prosecco, with High Tea following consisting of a selection of sandwiches, mini quiches, fresh scones with cream and jam, a wide selection of sponges and cakes and, of course, tea.

Music was provided by Ukie-Toones who have been performing for charitable organisations for six years and have themselves raised £86,000 so far this year alone.

Although the purpose of the tea was to raise money for charity, there was also a remarkable twist to it. The Town Mayor, Cllr Clive Palmer and his wife Rosie, had celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary the previous day, while the Deputy Mayor, Cllr David Bowater and his wife Jo, would be celebrating their Golden Wedding a fortnight after the charity tea event!

Also attending the tea were local residents David and Judith Rosie who had just celebrated their Golden Wedding too, and to top it all, Maurice and Wendy Crowe had just celebrated their 61st anniversary.

The Mayor would like to thank Ukie-Toones for helping make the Tea so enjoyable: Waterdene Food Services, Perfect Parties, Tesco and Morrisons for their much appreciated contributions; and Cllr Karen Cursons for her “Golden Hamper” raffle prize, as well as staff at the White House who helped make the occasion such a success.
