It may be more than 60 miles from the coast but Leighton Buzzard is set to become a permanent beach destination, the LBO can reveal.

Following the popularity of last summer’s temporary beach in Parson’s Close Recreation Ground, plans are in place to create a beach open all year round.

Leighton-Linslade Town Council is currently seeking grant funding for project, which would see the £48,000 beach sited on the existing skatepark.

A new £80,000 skatepark would be opened at Page’s Park, which would take place before any work on the beach commences.

While a temporary beach will again be installed in Parson’s Close Rec this summer, funds permitting a permanent beach could be ready for summer 2016.

Leighton-Linslade town clerk Mark Saccoccio said the vision was to make Parson’s Close a “top quality destination park”.

He told the LBO: “The temporary beach was a revelation, people from out of the parish came to use it.

“One of the positives is that it contributes to the economic wellbeing of the town, it brings people in who use the local shops.

“It would also represent value for money to get it there permanently instead of on a temporary basis.

“We are confident it would be used for a reasonable amount of the year, with use for sports and fitness groups as well as anyone else.”

With an eye on securing Green Flag status for Parson’s Close Rec, the town council is also mulling over plans to splash the cash on a new £193,000 toilet block and cafe.

This would be brought in alongside the temporary beach.
