The Grovebury Road Retail Park 6,000sq ft store received more than 100 applications for the seven jobs that had been created, including new grooming positions.

The shop will provide thousands of dedicated pet products, catering for local dogs, cats, small animals, chickens, birds and fish as well as wildlife.

It will also feature a Groom Room which offers a wide range of grooming services including microchipping, nail clipping or a full bath and blow dry by stylists who all receive extensive training.

An adoption centre, run by independent charity, Support Adoption For Pets will also open in the new store. Since being established in 2006, the charity has helped over 1,000 rehoming centres and animal welfare organisations across the UK by awarding grants and running fundraising campaigns with Pets at Home.

Area manager at Pets at Home Leighton Buzzard, Alison Miller, said: “There was a strong demand from Leighton Buzzard pet owners for Pets at Home to come to town, and we’re very pleased to have been able to grant them their wish.

“Pets at Home is committed to recruiting from the local area and I’m looking forward to welcoming a team of talented individuals in Leighton Buzzard.”

Applicants for Pets at Home go through a number of stages to assess their compatibility for the role. Those recruited receive extensive training on pet care and pet knowledge which is endorsed by City & Guilds. Colleagues are also given the option to gain specialist qualifications in pet care during their career with the company.
