Leighton community centre should be used as polling station’

The community centre on Meadow Way should be used as a polling station in future elections, according to a Leighton-Linslade Town Councillor.

Mike Bishop, who represents Planets Ward, has made the plea to Central Bedfordshire Council, whose public consulation on polling districts and stations has just ended.

Councillor Bishop said: “The centre has been used in the past and I am concerned that the consultation by Central Bedfordshire Council proposes that residents should be allocated Beaudesert School as their polling station. Certainly the school is not far away but Meadow Way has a poor turnout record and with falling voting numbers every effort should be made to make voting as convenient as possible. The hall is right in the centre of the community and has been used before so why make people go out of their way?”

The town council has also asked Central Beds to consider using the new Astral Park Community Centre as a polling station for parts of Grovebury Ward when it is open.
