Self-employed HR consultant Barry Fitz-Patrick thinks his wife Soo is the funniest girl in town.
And to prove it he’s organising an open-mic night for her 50th birthday in aid of Comic Relief.
“She’s always wanted to do something like this but has never had any success,” he said. “So we decided to do it ourselves and we’re inviting local talent to come along and have a go.”
They’re hoping to attract between six and eight aspiring comedians to the Leighton Buzzard Library Theatre event on Friday, May 22.
“Each one will have a 10-minute slot and the show’s format is Open Mic,” Barry, 57, said.
“But it will be in front of a mixed audience so we don’t want anything smutty.
“We’d also like local businesses to get involved. Hopefully they can support us and help sponsor the show in exchange for the exposure.”
The couple, who married last year and live in Church Road, Linslade, are keeping their fingers crossed a local celebrity will take part in the fundraiser.
“We can’t confirm anything yet,” Barry said. “But if we get someone with a ‘name’ that will add weight to the evening and help ticket sales.”
A price has still to be decided but it’s likely to be £10 – £12 on the door – with a minimum of £5 going to Comic Relief. Their target is a £2,000 contribution to the charity.
Luton Tui Group patissier Soo, 50, loves one-liners and Tommy Cooper is one of her heroes. She’s also a fan of Milton Jones of Mock the Week.
Barry said: “She makes me laugh, she loves anything really silly.
“She’s a bit of a mickey-taker, quick-witted, instantaneous.
“I like clever use of words, intelligent humour, Morecambe and Wise.”
Here are a trio of Soo specials to get you in the mood:
“I used to sell Filofaxes to the Mafia – very organized crime!”
“What is the most dangerous insect in the world? Hepatitis Bee!”
“Where is the most dangerous place to swim in the world? Hepatitis Sea!”
