Sixth form students at Vandyke Upper School offered some much appreciated festive cheer when they put on a Christmas party for some of Leighton Buzzard’s senior citizens.
A team of volunteers from Year 12 and 13 welcomed 30 pensioners from two local sheltered housing units, Laburnam Court and Hamilton Court, to the sixth form common room.
As well as a lavish buffet tea, guests were treated to live musical performances, carol singing, bingo and a quiz.
Students had fundraised in the preceding weeks in order to pay for the event, which has now become a much-enjoyed annual tradition at the school.
“This year’s event was particularly well attended and the atmosphere was fantastic,” said Sean Downey, Vandyke’s Director of Sixth Form. “Students are aware that this can be a lonely time of year for some older members of the community, and really enjoy the chance to offer them an afternoon of fun and good company. It’s always rewarding – they get as much out of it as the guests do.”
