Three men sentenced for violence after Luton Carnival

Three Luton men have been sentenced today for their roles in a riot after last year's Luton Carnival.

Nathan Kiasala, 20, and Jason Kiasala, 18, both of Styles Close, have been sentenced to 18 months and 16 months respectively after pleading guilty to grievous bodily harm, possession of a bladed article, and violent disorder.

Daniel Idiabeta, 19, of Oakley Road, was sentenced to two years for his part in the carnival violence after he pleaded guilty to violent disorder and he was found guilty of possession of bladed article.

He also received a two year and eight month sentence for unrelated drugs offences, including possession with intent to supply cocaine, after being arrested following a warrant at his home address in Luton in January. He will serve the sentences consecutively, making a total of four years and eight months in jail.

The trio took part in the violent aftermath of what had been a peaceful and smoothly-run event on 29 May 2016. They were caught on CCTV assaulting a man in the town centre and were also found to be in possession of a knife.

The disorder resulted in four people being taken to hospital and police are still carrying out investigations into other potential offenders.

Supt Greg Horsford said: “This was a completely unacceptable display of behaviour from a large group of people who attempted to ruin what had been a great event for everyone involved, with their mindless and needless violence.

“I’m extremely proud of all of our officers involved in this case – from those who were initially deployed to the hostile and potentially dangerous incident, to those who have undertaken the subsequent complex investigation, which has ultimately led to these sentences today.

“We absolutely will not tolerate those who wish to bring disorder to our communities and those who think that this type of behaviour is acceptable should see this as a reminder that they will be made to pay for their actions.

“Plans are already in place for this year’s carnival, which will no doubt be another fantastic event for everyone in Luton, and I hope this result acts as a deterrent to anyone who thinks they can attempt to ruin the community spirit with their criminal actions.”
