The dance students of Vandyke were privileged to have a workshop run by the Akram Khan Dance Company.

Akram Khan is the practitioner that the students study at A Level; he is a world famous and highly regarded dancer and choreographer and is most recently recognised for choreographing a large section of the dance within the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games 2012.

Assistant director of the Akram Khan Dance Company and rehearsal director Jose Agudo, spent the day teaching the students a vast range of movements and phrases, key to Khan’s unique style.

They learnt Kathak, a classical form of Indian dance which was fused with contemporary dance movements. The dancers were honoured to have such a high achieving and renowned dancer, teaching them. For the whole day, the students were treated as professionals and were expected to push themselves to perform to their very best. Jose taught the dancers as if they were working within the company and accepted nothing less than perfection, a challenge the dancers lived up to.

The students are now set to dance solos in the style of Khan ready for their own exams this year!
