From bad to worse for Town as Tring hit them for seven

The start to the season has been far from ideal for Leighton Town, culminating in Saturday 7-1 humiliation at the hands of Tring Athletic.

With just five points from their opening five games, Leighton have struggled in the early stages of the SSML Premier Division so far.

But after going four unbeaten, Danny Nicholls’ side headed to Cow Lane eager to make it five. It would not be the case after a catastrophic first half.

It took Athletic just four minutes to open the scoring, Ashton Campbell taking advantage of a defensive mix-up to lift the ball over keeper Tom Wyant.

It was 2-0 four minutes later when Kieran Turner bent a wonderful strike past Wyant to double the lead.

Barely were there 10 minutes on the clock before Athletic effectively had the match wrapped up when Jack Reid finished off goalmouth scramble to make it 3-0 to the home side.

It should have been 4-0 when Turner burst through, only to drag his strike wide, but Tring did not have to wait long before making it so as Elliott Goward rattled home on 20 minutes.

Nicholls rang the changes, making a double first-half change but it did little to stop the flow of the tide as Campbell and then Turner forced good saves from Wyant.

But there was little he could do about Campbell’s low drive which found the corner as Athletic went in at the break with a runaway 5-0 lead.

Things did not get much better in the second period, with Tring making it six just three minutes after the restart as Goward hit his second of the afternoon.

Wyant did his level best to deny Campbell his hat-trick as Tring continued to pour forwards.

With 20 minutes to go though, Leighton got their name on the score-sheet as Tom Bryant managed to pull one back, but a late Tommy Twelves strike would make it 7-1.
