Great Brickhill need help on the final day to win the league

Great Brickhill look like they will have to settle for second spot in Cherwell League Division 1 after Oxford Downs matched their win over Banbury 2nds on Saturday to remain 16 points clear with one game remaining.

Last weekend’s title decided saw Downs break clear of Brickhill, meaning only a major slip-up against fourth placed Twyford, and Brickhill beating third placed Long Marston, would hand Doug Aris’ side the title.

They made sure Oxford would not have it easy though as they beat Banbury by three wickets on Saturday to at least take it to the final day.

Sean Gilson would be the star man again for Brickhill as he took 4-44, while Arjun Jhala (2-48) and Jack Woodhouse (2-40) would do their part in removing the visitors for 234.

There were some good knocks in the Banbury side though, with Jack Lambden (65) and Richard Simpson (49) doing their bit.

Great Brickhill made a good start with Mark Nelson (60) and Patrick Sreenivasaprasad (46) getting the home side going, but bad things came in twos early on.

No sooner has Sreenivasaprasad gone, Jilesh Pattni joined him two balls later, with Austin John walking just two balls after Gilson was dismissed for 44.

But Gareth Davson’s 46 low down at seven would be enough to see Brickhill (249-7) comfortably over the line for victory.
