Husband-and-wife golfers have been named as “Clubman of the Year” at Leighton Buzzard where they have both been members for around 40 years.
Jackie and Nigel Phelps were named by outgoing Captain Derek Lindley as his top clubmen to acknowledge the voluntary work they have undertaken over the course of many years at the Plantation Road club.
Whilst Stewkley based Jackie and Nigel are no mean golfers, it was their unstinting voluntary work in helping maintain the gardens around the club house and their skills with a paint brush which caught the eye of skipper Lindley.
Jackie, an 18-handicap golfer and Leighton Ladies Captain 20 years ago is no stranger to success on the course and has partnered husband Nigel to victory in several “mixed” competitions.
For several years, they were members of the club Social committee and regularly support functions taking place at the club.
Says Nigel, a 14-handicap golfer, who is now partly retired from his job as a roofing project manager: “This award came as a complete surprise.
“But it’s nice to know the club appreciate what we and many others do to help maintain the excellent facilities we have.”
Having hosted eight wedding receptions in the last 12 months, the Leighton club has applied for a licence to hold civil ceremonies on the premises.
They’re hoping to be able to hold the ceremonies with a registrar conducting the formalities in the appropriately named “Match Room” as couples tie the knot.
It’s anticipated the process of obtaining the civil service licence will be completed in the next few weeks, after which it will remain valid for a three year period.
Wedding receptions are held on the first floor of the club house, offering fantastic views across the course from panoramic windows and balconies.
The golf club initiative is backed by a Wedding Fair being held on the premises on Sunday, February 15 when representatives from 20 wedding-related businesses will be offering visitors advice and help to plan their special day.
The doors open to visitors from 11.30am, with free admission.
