The three day Olympic Hopes Sprint Regatta for under seventeen’s was the venue for another successful Leighton junior in Charlie Smith.
Charlie is part of the English National Talent Squad and was selected to compete in the 500m and 1000m sprints at this international competition.
The 15-strong GB team were one of 24 countries from around the world including Australia, Canada, Germany, USA with the largest contingent being the Eastern Europeans.
Hungary fielded a team of eighty-one, Poland fifty-nine and so it continued.
Overall there were in excess of five hundred competitors. The competition, held in Bydgoszcz, proved to be top class.
Charlie qualified for the final in both of his events, from four heats and two semi-finals.
In his 1000m, Charlie finished 7th in a fiercely contested race.
In the 500m, Charlie was very pleased to make the final, having failed to qualify for it last year.
Again, a quick race saw Charlie finish sixth with less than five seconds between the top six.
Elsewhere, Eloise Hall and Mat Callow made the trip to Bouchemaine, near Angers to Compete in the Kayak Marathon French National Championships at the weekend.
The pair were picked for this Junior GB marathon development trip following a season of consistently good performances.
The two-day competition saw Eloise paddle up an age group to race K2 U18 with her partner from Chelmsford to gain a well-deserved silver medal.
The pair worked well with the other British crew to make it a GB first and second.
Mat joined up for the first time with a Lithlingow paddler to race the French course.
The boys drove hard against an experienced field to reach eleventh place from a field of thirty-three.
On day two in her K1 Eloise finished in a pleasing sixth from thirty-one.
Sadly for Mat his race was cut short when his rudder broke half way round the course.
