Derek Shaw owns a business repairing vehicle bodies – and needed hospital treatment when he damaged his own in a golfing accident.

But weeks after being immobilised when he fell from a buggy damaging his shoulder, 53-year-old Derek has bounced back, cashing in on Leighton Buzzard’s Christmas foursomes competition and then on Sunday, winning an annual greensomes event with wife Maggie.

Derek teamed up with Terry Jordan for the foursomes event where the 36 pairings which took part this year are auctioned. Total prize money of over £2,500 is shared amongst the top 12 finishers with Derek collecting a total of £343 after finishing 8th and his half share in the game of Peter Gadsden and Geoff Allatt, who finished 5th.

And on Sunday, he teamed up with wife Maggie to win the Christmas Greensomes, a competition sponsored by former Club Captain Mel Glover and wife Pauline, an ex-Ladies captain of the Plantation Road club. Maggie, who only recently took up golf, and 19-handicapper Derek, finished with 34 points, winning on countback from runners-up Alice Ward and John Tarbox.

Mick and Marilyn Myatt took third place, beating John and Christine Bateman on countback after both finished with 33 points.

Said Derek: “I’ve been really struggling with my shoulder for the past five weeks and it was great to get back playing golf again. Winning was a real bonus.”

Paul Atkinson and Richard Dempsey won the Christmas foursomes with 39 points, two clear of Manny Barker and Terry Dell. Jamie Stone and Chris Read, Robbie John and Stuart Goodwin and Peter Gadsden and Geoff Allatt all finished with 36 points, with Ben Irvine and Steve Foster, Jeff Wood and Derek Richards and Terry Jordan and Derek Shaw finishing with 35.5 pts. Nick King and Dave Roberts were ninth with 35pts; Stuart Leslie and Ron Pearce finished 10th with 34.5pts and Graham Hazel and Steve Molyneaux and Philip Spratt Callaghan and Martyn Price completed the prize winning pairings with 34 pts.

Lila Garrod, Jackie Stimpson and Norma Stevens-Hack teamed up to win Leighton Ladies Christmas stableford with 74 points, one clear of Leslie Brazier, Jill Pniewski and Julie Smith, with Gill McDougall, Marilyn Myatt and Maggie Shaw third with 72pts. Lynn Newnham, Val Smith and Anne Tilbury won the front nine with 37pts, with Paula Cox, Barbara Rickard and Sandra Carter winning the back nine with 35pts.

Rugby legend Willie John McBride was the guest speaker at Leighton’s Gents Evening on Friday, revealing experiences of his 63 Tests for Ireland, five tours with the Lions and 17 Lions Test Caps. The evening raised more than £500 for club captain Steve Leng’s chosen charity, Keech Cottage.

Former Leighton club secretary John Burchell has been installed as the new President of the Rushmere Golf Society whose players are mainly members of the Leighton and Woburn clubs.
