Public raise issues of nuisance bikers and street drinkers with police

The team was in the town centre from 10am until 5pm on February 18 listening to local concerns.

Sgt Louise Bates said: “Among the issues raised by the public are nuisance bikes, which we take a multi-agency approach against.

“Op Sentinel has engaged with parents about the risks of their children being involved in this dangerous behaviour, and we have noted a marked reduction in the number of youths on bikes that have been seen in the town centre and the associated anti-social behaviour and lower level criminality.

“Further issues raised by the residents were street drinkers in the town.

“Street drinkers in Leighton Buzzard are a long standing issuelong-standing issue and require a partnership approach looking to tackle the root cause of the addiction, as well as providing housing and medical intervention.

“A vast number of these treet drinkers have complex needs and whilst there is a requirement for enforcement from the police where offences are committed.

“We are exploring alternative preventative measures and are working alongside the force’s licensing team in relation to the selling of alcohol to those involved.”
