A large crowd of people gathered in Leighton Buzzard's high street this morning (Friday) as they waited for police to deal with a suspicious package.

The box was first discovered at around 8.10am outside Santander bank in Hockliffe Street – the scene of a dramatic ramraid on February 15.

The public was unable to get to their parked cars or to their place of work as a cordon cut off a large section of Leighton town centre.

As the crowd shivered in the cold, a loud explosion was heard at 10.37am as the bomb squad carried out a controlled explosion on the suspicious parcel.

Police have now confirmed the package was never a threat and roads reopened at 11.08am.
