Smith impresses England bosses to get call-up

Vandyke Upper student Ryan Smith has won an international call-up after impressive performances in the National Schools golf championships.

Ryan, 17, will play for England in the NASUWT match against Wales Schools at the Clyne golf club, Swansea, on August 29.

The three-times Bedfordshire County champion for the 12,14 and 16-year age groups, plays off a handicap of 1.1 having taken up the sport ten years ago. Left-hander Ryan was runner-up in the County Schools championships last October, finished third in the recent South East Schools championships and put in an excellent performance in the National Schools championships.

A member of the Dunstable Downs Golf Club, Ryan is currently focusing on his studies and hopes to pursue a career in golf when he has completed his education.

>> Club President John Preston has won Leighton’s Senior section handicap championship, his nett 70 pipping Denis Leitch by a shot, with Nick Rathbone finishing third with a nett 72.

The competition for players over the age of 80 played over nine holes was won by the evergreen Gordon Francis with a nett 36, while the Geoff Tweed trophy for the player recording the least putts was won by Graham Robinson with 26 putts.
