Legendary guitarist for MK

Legendary American songwriter, guitar virtuoso and talented pianist Nils Lofgren will visit the Stables in Milton Keynes next month on the first leg of his UK tour.

A long-time member of Bruce Springsteen’s E Street band – who’ve recently been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame – he’s back to headline his own show. He’ll be joined for an acoustic set by multi-instrumentalist Greg Varlotta.

Nils was born in Chicago in 1951 and started playing classical accordion at the tender age of five.

He formed Grin when he was 17 and two years later joined Neil Young’s band, playing piano and guitar on After the Gold Rush.

His first solo album was hailed by influential Rolling Stone magazine as one of the finest rock albums of 1975.

He appeared with the Beatles in Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band and contributed to The Simpsons, completing two Christmas jingles with Bart.

Bruce Springsteen disbanded the E Street Band in 1989 but Nils rejoined The Boss for several sbsequent tours, including the 2012-2013 Wrecking Ball Tour and this year’s High Hopes Tour.

He’s a musicians’s musician. Neil Young calls him “an inspiration” while Sting says Nils is “genuinely one of my favourite musicians.”

According to Springsteen, Nils’ singing and guitar-playing are “ as distinctive as they’ve ever been.”

On the downside, the exuberant performer has had both hips replaced. He was an enthusaistic sportsman in his youth, a competitive gymnast and keen basketball player.

But you’ll be lucky if you get a ticket to see the master in action - the Stables concert on January 8 has sold out.
