Shuttleworth College cattle score Champion title in regional competition

The College’s Red Poll Heifer ‘Nonna’ won the title of Champion Homebred Heifer in the Midlands herd Competition for Red Poll Cattle held this summer, with the prize giving taking place this October. The competition was judged by Helen Arthan, Red Bull Cattle Society Director, and hosted by the Society, whose members celebrate the breed and promote their use within the livestock industry.

A string of firsts was also awarded to the College team in the category of progeny group Calves, ‘Penari’ and ‘Petunia’, and for three related females in their Cattle collection – mother ‘Honey’ with her two daughters ‘Mamma Mia’ and ‘Peanut’. The team also won reserved champion titles in the categories of large herd, related females, senior cow, junior cow and senior bull.

Agricultural students and staff at Shuttleworth College work tirelessly throughout the year to prepare cattle for showing at these specialist competitions. Securing recognition for their hard work and efforts is a positive reflection on both the college’s livestock and the training programme as a sector-focused campus of the wider college group.

Head of School for Farming and Resources, Shane Durham, said: “This win is a great addition to our string of accolades for our livestock, and a true testament to the hard work and dedicated effort our students give to prepare our animals for showing. Events like this offer great insight into the industry and put our training into tangible experience for our students.”

These recent results further build on the reputation of Shuttleworth College in agricultural shows, following the college’s wins at the South Suffolk show in May earlier this year.
