Work on the bridge, which takes the road over the River Ouzel, includes repairs to parapet walls, replacement of bricks and railings, rust removal and a new protective coating.

The road will be closed for six weeks while the maintenance work is carried out by contractor Irvine Grenson, and signed diversions will direct motorists to the alternative route through Stoke Hammond and via Galley Lane.

A Buckinghamshire County Council spokesman said: “We appreciate the understanding of residents and businesses while we do the work, and we’re making our diversion signs as informative as possible to help motorists at a glance.”
