Detective Constable Mandy Godfree, investigating said: “This was a really nasty attack in which the victim was targeted because of his gender orientation. Hate crime will not be tolerated and we are making every effort to find those responsible for this completely unprovoked assault.

“At the time of the assault the recreation ground would have been busy with families making use of the facilities and benches around the park. I am appealing for any witnesses to this incident or anyone with information about the attack to come forward.”

Call Det Con Godfree on 101 with information, or alternatively contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
