Leighton Buzzard ‘rebels’ highlight climate emergency

Extinction Rebellion (XR) Leighton Buzzard 'rebels' dodged the rain last Saturday to hang a banner on the bridge at the Linslade end of the town and give out leaflets in support of XR’s Climate and Ecological Emergency Bill.

The move was part of nationwide actions by XR this week to demand Parliament adopt the CEE Bill, as the current Environment Bill is considered by the group to be far too weak to make the progress needed.

During 2019 many thousands of people joined XR to take peaceful protest at perceived lack of sufficient action by the government to tackle the climate emergency.

The pandemic stopped such actions during most of 2020, but a spokesperson for XR Leighton Buzzard said: “We have to again take action as the government is failing us and the country on climate change.

People we spoke to today are concerned, they hear scientists constantly warning that we are fast approaching a ‘tipping point’ after which it is expected that climate warming will be unstoppable with dire consequences for the whole planet – including here in Leighton Buzzard.

"They want ‘someone’ to wake up the government to take more action- that is what XR is doing.”
