Wolverton’s West End pre-school has been a thriving part of the town for more than 12 years, meeting in the Methodist church building.

But a change of committee and a direct debit blunder rocked its bank balance and left it £2,000 short of funds.

Now the pre-school is being run by a new committee of five parents - and they are racing against time to raise the cash.

“It seems an impossible task to raise £2,000 in such a short time but we’re determined to give it our best shot,” said committee member Nancy Pyburn.

She said previous accountancy problems led to bills being unpaid by the pre-school, which relies upon parents’ Early Years payments to make ends meet.

“We’d agreed to pay one creditor in instalments, but then they sudden took the cash out all at once via a direct debit. They’ve now refused to pay it back, so it’s left us with a big cash flow problem,” said Nancy.

The family fun day aims to raise as much as possible of the money needed to ensure the nursery has a healthy future.

It will be held in the grounds of Wolverton House between 12 noon and 4pm.

Businesses all over the town have shown their support by donating raffle prizes, services and entertainment, said Nancy.

There will be three bouncy castles, pony rides, a Cha Cha Chimps display, stalls. sideshows and live music.

“It really will be a fun afternoon out for all the family and we want as many people as possible to come and support us,” said Nancy.
