Going for gold at the Palace

A quartet of students from Cedars and Vandyke Upper Schools were delighted when Prince Philip singled them out for a chat at a ceremony to present them with their gold Duke of Edinburgh awards. The event also marked the scheme's diamond anniversary.

Both schools are designated DoE centres with youngsters benefitting immensely from the opportunities that it provides.

Van Dyke’s DofE co-ordinator Fiona Green said: “It was a marvellous day enjoying the wonderful gardens and celebrating the students’ success.

“We met Prince Philip who took time speaking individually to the young people and he made everyone feel very welcome.”

Cedars deputy head Lisa Hines said: “The sun shone and it was a lovely occasion. It was intriguing to see behind the scenes and to realise how big the gardens are. It was a great day enjoyed by all.”
