Huge car showroom roof collapses in Milton Keynes

Fire crews were called to the scene in Northfield Drive at 12.38pm by the VW Group.

They were greeted by what was described as a ‘significant structural collapse’ where around a third of the roof on the two storey building – which is used as a car showroom and workshop – has caved in.

A spokesman for Bucks & Milton Keynes Fire and Rescue Service said everyone has been accounted for and there had been no injuries.

Staff are believed to have spotted the danger and the site was safely evacuated before the collapse.

A spokesman for the fire service, which remains at the scene in a ‘supportive role’, said: “It is a significant structural collapse, about a third of the 200m by 100m roof which we believe is used to store cars, has collapsed into the ground floor and about 10 cars are involved.

“Everyone has been accounted for and there are no injuries. Firefighters have been making the scene safe and gas and electricity has been isolated.

“We are there in a supportive role now and it seems there was a safe evacuation before the collapse happened.”

The incident has not caused any disruption to the road network in the area and Milton Keynes building control officers as well as a construction firm are also at the scene.

Milton Keynes Council confirmed building control inspectors were investigating the incident.

The Jardine Motors Group released a statement on behalf of Audi which stated: “Part of the roof of Milton Keynes Audi, covering the workshop area, collapsed at midday and the building has been evacuated. Nobody has been injured and we are currently investigating the cause of the collapse and the extent of the damage.

“All customers directly affected by this incident will be contacted in person.”
