It’s countdown for shoeboxes of joy

The Herald&Post is proud to be a dropping-off point for Operation Christmas Child, a heart-warming campaign to bring joy to underprivileged Third World youngsters.

Every year readers of all ages and faiths take time to select presents that will brighten the lives of children who may never have received a gift before - like three-year-old Diana (right) who was found living with her alcoholic mother in a make-shift shelter in a Belarus forest.

An OCC spokesman said: “The tiny tot didn’t speak at all and hid under the table because she was afraid of people.

“Social services took her to hospital where her infections and skin diseases were treated.

“She is now having speech therapy and beginning to communicate.”

Diana’s recovery was given a huge boost with the arrival of a gaily-wrapped shoebox. She was beside herself with excitement when she realised all the gifts it contained were for her.

This year’s deadline is fast approaching - it’s a week tomorrow, Friday November 18.
