Lee Rigby's family back Help For Heroes truck convoy

The 80-truck convoy was joined by motorcycles and classic cars on its journey from the A5 Watling Street truck stop to the showground on Stanbridge Road.

Also at the event was the family of Fusilier Lee Rigby who was murdered in the street near the Royal Artillery Barracks in Woolwich, southeast London in May 2013.

Leighton Linslade Mayor, councillor Steve Cotter, welcomed Phillip McClure, Lee Rigby’s father, to the showground after the truck convoy arrived.

Mr Rigby donated a signed picture of the Stobart truck which bears his son’s name which was auctioned at the event for several charities.

Mark Harris, one of the coordinators for the event, said: “The truck convoy was awesome, the streets were six deep with people, it went really well on the first day, unfortunately we had to close on Sunday because of the weather. Scotty’s Little Soldiers and the East of England Air Ambulance were both at the event and some other charities as well, we haven’t got a total amount yet but hopefully we raised over £5,000.

“We would like to thank Phillip, his brother and the family for supporting the truck convoy. They travelled in the Lee Rigby truck, our thoughts go out to them all. The whole event was very emotional.”

Visitors enjoyed live music, rides, stalls, a bouncy castle and military training displays at the showground.

Mr Harris added: “We are hoping to do it again next year and both Leighton Buzzard and Dunstable Town Mayors are keen to see it back next year, it was great to see so many people supporting the event and coming to the town centres.”
