Our town is now fit for a Queen

Clean for the Queen is a nationwide initiative to get people clearing up their local area in celebration of Her Majes’s 90th birthday.

Specially produced purple bags were provided and the town council lent the volunteers equipment.

Fortunately, the weather stayed fine during the three days of litter collection. Even the snow early on Saturday morning melted.

Townsfolk joined Friends of Leighton-Linslade in Bloom, Friends of Tiddenfoot Waterside Park and the Leighton Buzzard Canoe Club to complete litter picks at Tiddenfoot Waterside Park and its surroundings and along the Grand Union Canal.

As well as the usual cans, bottles and fast food containers, objects recovered included a microwave, chairs, a fire extinguisher, a satellite receiver, a barbecue, running shoes, toy guns, car tyres and wheels, old curtains, clothing and broken fishing tackle.

More than 100 volunteer hours were spent collecting a total of 93 full bags of rubbish plus the larger items from four separate areas in the town.

The Friends of Leighton-Linslade in Bloom would like to thank all those individual volunteers who joined in.

Residents of Heath and Reach held their own litter pick on Thrift Road and the area around the British Legion Hut.

A total of 24 man hours was spent and 15 bags of assorted rubbish were collected.
