Have your say on new powers to tackle vehicle-related antisocial behaviour across Central Bedfordshire

Central Bedfordshire Council has launched a consultation on introducing proposed new powers to tackle vehicle-related antisocial behaviour across the area.

The council is seeking the views of residents, businesses and visitors on introducing a Public Space Protection Order, with the aim of tackling harmful vehicle-related behaviours such as car meets, street racing, excessive engine noise, obstruction of highways and intimidating behaviour.

The council says these behaviours are having ‘a significant impact on residents’ quality of life,’ particularly in areas including Houghton Regis and Dunstable.

Data from Bedfordshire Police shows that Central Bedfordshire accounts for nearly half of all vehicle-related antisocial behaviour incidents across the county.

If the order is introduced, it would apply across all of Central Bedfordshire and would give police powers to take enforcement action, including issuing £100 Fixed Penalty Notices or pursuing court action for non-compliance.

It would also enable enforcement to take place at static car meets and where incidents are captured by CCTV.

If introduced, enforcement would begin in October 2026, and the order would run for three years, with a formal review required to extend it.

The consultation is now open, and runs until Friday March 13.

You can have your say online or email [email protected] or call 0300 300 8000 for a paper copy of the consultation documents.
