Maggie Rae, 14, has been making her way down the Grand Union Canal in all weathers determined to smash her goal of paddling 200km.

The Leighton Buzzard Canoe Club member who attends Cedars Upper School says the challenge is also part of her Duke of Edinburgh’s Award.

Her mum Zoe said: “Maggie wanted to challenge herself to go out in snow, fog, rain, wind and freezing conditions. She’s actually really enjoyed paddling in the cold. Normally she’s on the water once at the weekend and once during the week, so if you see her on your daily exercise, please give her a shout of encouragement to keep her going.”

So far, Maggie has raised £1,598 completing 40km. Her inspiration for doing this is her great uncle John who recently lost his life to battling Covid-19.

Mrs Rae added: “The care he received from the doctors and nurses was outstanding however, they couldn’t save him. Maggie wants to give something back as a thank you for all they are doing for everyone at this time.

“I’m so proud of my daughter. Not only is she raising money for a great cause but by going out on the water it’s great for her mental health especially at this time. I would recommend everyone getting out there and challenging themselves. You don’t need a kayak or equipment to be doing something. All charities need our help at the moment. Let’s all get out there and raise some money for them.”
