Locals joined in in their droves as the town council, in collaboration with the Rotary Club of Leighton-Linslade, staged the lighting of a birthday beacon at Parson’s Close Rec.

Thursday’s celebration began with the Leighton Buzzard Fun Runners carrying torches on a seven-mile run around the parish, starting at The Hare Inn, Linslade, at 6.15pm and finishing at the Market Cross at 7.30pm.

At 7.45pm the torches were carried by Cub Scouts to the recreation ground, escorted by residents aged to represent the decades of the Queen’s life – who were nominated through the LBO.

The main beacon was then lit by the Town Mayor, Councillor Ray Berry at 8.10pm, followed by a firework display.

After the fireworks there was a rendition of Happy Birthday and the National Anthem followed by a full Peal of Bells by All Saints Church.

Councillor Berry said: “As a four-year-old when our Queen ascended to the throne, I have no real memory of any other Monarch of our United Kingdom. It was therefore both an unreserved pleasure and a great pride for me to join our townspeople and to light our town’s beacon in celebration of Her Majesty’s 90th birthday. Long may she reign over us and our sovereign nation!”
