Relief at end to week-long traffic chaos in Leighton Buzzard

Roadworks which caused traffic chaos in Leighton Buzzard this week were due to a car crashing into a roadside cabinet.

The incident meant broadband provider BT Openreach was called to carry out necessary repairs in Leighton Road, causing huge delays for motorists.

A number of residents complained to councillors and MP Alex Mayer ahead of the work finally being completed yesterday (March 5).

Victoria Harvey, Central Beds Councillor for Leighton Linslade West, raised awareness of the problem, posting on social media: “There were no engineers working at the site on Monday or Tuesday yet all the traffic was held up causing chaos and huge delays for so many people.”

She also contacted MP Alex Mayer who had put pressure on BT Openreach to finish the work.

Alex Mayer, said: “After being contacted by residents concerned about the roadworks on Leighton Road and the traffic over the past week, I immediately got in touch with Openreach. I made the point that children had been arriving late to school because of the delays.

"They explained the work was needed after a car crashed into a roadside cabinet, meaning it had to be rebuilt and the internal connections remade. They then classified it as emergency work and pledged to complete it as quickly as possible.

“I’m pleased to confirm that work has now taken place – the hole has been filled in, paving blocks put back and the two-way traffic lights removed.”
