Volunteers busy creating beautiful poppy displays for Leighton-Linslade Remembrance

Donations of beautiful, red poppies have flooded the town council offices as Remembrance Day approaches.

Volunteers are hard at work creating artistic features that will adorn the town during November.

All the poppies have been knitted, crocheted and donated by the community – and there's still time to send in your creations.

A Leighton-Linslade Town Council spokeswoman said: "We would like to express our thanks and gratitude to all the volunteers who have been busy knitting and crocheting in recent months, to add to this year’s display for the period of Remembrance.

"The knitted poppy project started in 2022 and has gone from strength to strength each year, with displays including at the Ouzel River bridge on West Street, at the Linslade Garden of Remembrance, Vandyke Road Cemetery, the White House and at the Market Cross, with kind permission of the Trustees."

In addition to donations received from individual residents, the council has welcomed contributions from groups including the Trefoil Guild, National Women’s Register LB, ELFT, the WI and Time2craft.

The spokeswoman added: "Volunteers are now hard at work creating additional displays from the new poppies which will add to this year’s commemoration. Each year, consideration is given to possible locations where the poppies can be best appreciated and where the display will have the most impact."

For 2026, it is hoped to extend the displays over the river bridge and to donate some poppies to Artbox LB for their planned Remembrance display in the reimagined phone box in Church Square.

The timing of the poppy displays is partly dependent on weather conditions – but the displays will be in place by early November and will be removed again shortly after Armistice Day, to be safely stored at the White House until the following year.
