"We are growing something special for our community": New orchard set to be planted at Leighton Buzzard park

A new orchard is set to be planted at a Leighton Buzzard park, as part of a project which Leighton-Linslade Town Council hopes will "grow something special for our community."

Fencing work is now under way at Astral Park on Johnson’s Drive, followed by the orchard being planted this week.

The orchard is set to feature native trees which have been specially selected for their ability to withstand wet conditions.

Leighton Linslade Town Council said they were hopeful the orchard "would provide habitats and food for pollinators such as bees, butterflies and birds, and also enhance biodiversity and help reduce flooding in Astral Park."

Access to the orchard area is set to be restricted over the next few years, to give the trees the opportunity to establish.

The football pitches in the park, which is next to Astral Park Sports and Community Centre, will be unaffected by the planting of the orchard.
