Radio Rob plugs in at Glastonbury

A YOUNG Luton DJ beat off hundreds of applicants to win a back stage stint as a radio reporter at the recent Glastonbury Festival.

Rob Geary, who is due to graduate on July 21 from the University of Bedfordshire, was one of four winners selected in the national competition to work at the festival’s radio station, Worthy FM.

Rob, a manager for the University of Bedfordshire’s radio LaB 97.1 FM, entered the online competition at the end of March.

He had to create a two-minute audio clip, complete with links and jingles for Worthy FM Licensee and Station Manager Joanne Schofield and the co-organiser of Glastonbury, Emily Eavis.

Rob described his prize – which saw him producing, editing and presenting radio features – as an “unbelievable experience” and “the best ten days of my life”.

Worthy FM also sent Rob celebrity spotting.

He had the chance to meet Ed Macfarlane, lead singer of Friendly Fires as well as Elbow frontman Guy Garvey in the VIP section of the Pyramid Stage.

Rob also met BBC Radio 1 presenter Jo Whiley in the BBC compound and even managed to catch a glimpse of U2 singer Bono.

Arriving three days before the event kicked off, he said it was a “totally different experience” to see Glastonbury before the festival-goers arrived.

On graduating, Rob hopes to pursue a career in the radio industry. Dr Janey Gordon, Radio LaB Project Leader said: “Rob is a real testimony to the experience gained from broadcasting on Radio LaB is giving our graduates the edge.”
