Somme remembered at Rushmere Country Park

Members of the Royal Engineers donned World War One uniform when they took part in a sponsored horse ride hosted by the Greensand Trust to commemorate the centenary of the conflict and the Battle of the Somme.

The event - at Rushmere Country Park - raised funds for World Horse Welfare and the Blue Cross.

The winner of the Best Turned Out Horse and Rider was two-year-old Grace Howson sporting Union Jack colours. She was presented with a special rosette by Major Will MacGill.

There were also awards for the most donations collected by a single rider, the youngest rider and oldest horse.

All those participating received rosettes commemorating the Horse in War 1914-1918.

A field of 60 entered the 10 mile fun ride through the beautiful woodland of Rushmere Park and Rammamere Heath, providing safe terrain for all ages and abilities.

The Greensand Trust is an independent environmental charity that works with local communities and landowners to conserve and enhance the distinctive landscape, wildlife and history of the Greensand Ridge and wider area, improving access, understanding and enjoyment for the benefit of everyone.
