Time to spare? Then volunteer!

Two Leighton charities are looking for volunteers. They are Hospice at Home and the Leighton Linslade Unit of St John Ambulance.

The hospice urgently needs volunteer visitors.

A spokesperson said: “Volunteers don’t just help those with a terminal or life-limiting illness, they’re also priceless to the family.

“They allow carers time away from their role to go shopping, have their hair done, call a friend, go for a walk or just an opportunity to chat in confidence with someone outside the family.

“They offer friendship, support and where needed, practical help – through reading aloud, listening or just being there while the patient sleeps.”

Volunteers need to be friendly caring people who understand the need for discretion and privacy. A satisfactory DBS check is essential.

Unit manager Graham Neale said: “No one should die because they needed first aid and didn’t get it.

“We teach people first aid. They’re trained to a high standard to provide treatment at public events such as concerts or sports matches.

“No previous training is required, it will all be provided. We just look for a desire to help people.”

The Unit meets at Linslade Community Hall on Waterloo Road on Tuesday evenings.

Anyone interested in volunteering is welcome to come along to find out more.
