Work on London's new HS2 terminus means two lines will be out of action for large parts of 2021 services travelling from Northampton, Milton Keynes and Dacorum.

As well as two major six-week closures, major work will cause disruption for London Northwestern and Avanti West Coast passengers on four Bank Holidays and on other weekends between April and August.

Network Rail say that "most" trains will continue running but the closures are being announced now so that travellers can make "can make informed choices when travelling over spring and summer."

Network Rail’s West Coast South route director, James Dean, said: “We’re letting people know many months in advance so none of this comes as a surprise and passengers can stay on the move while we do this vital work.

“This will make the West Coast main line more reliable for our passengers and pave the way for HS2, which will bring much-needed extra railway capacity.

“There is no question such large scale improvements will mean changes for passengers. But we’re working with the industry to minimise disruption to passengers as much as possible next year."

Two lines into and out of Euston will be taken out of service between April 2 and May 17 and also from July 17 to August 31.

Other essential rail upgrades are planned over the Easter, May and August Bank Holiday weekends, including more work on the Bletchley flyover as part of the East-West Rail project

Stations and trains between Euston and the Midlands may be busier, services will change, journeys may take longer and in some instances buses will replace trains.

Once open — which is expected to be sometime between 2028 and 2031 — HS2 will more than double the number of seats out of station during peak hours and free up space on the West Coast Mainline for more local and long-distance commuter services to Hemel Hempstead, Milton Keynes and Northampton.

Rebuilding Euston will also deliver 11 new platforms 400 metres long, a new concourse and improved connections to London Underground stations as part of the overall £106billion project.
