Emergency services were alerted at approximately 2.45am to the accident involving a Ford Transit van and a Vauxhall Insignia, at the Half Moon Lane junction of the A5.

When firefighters from Dunstable Community Fire Station arrived they found the Transit van was on its side with a man trapped in front cab. Another male adult was out of their vehicle and in the care of ambulance service.

A fire service spokesman said: “The casualty was upside down in the cab of the transit van and firefighters used a raised platform from the Stopsley Rescue Support Unit to enable them to remove the roof of the transit van using specialised Halmatro and Lukas cutting equipment and gain access to the casualty.

“After the man was freed from the vehicle he was taken to hospital by the ambulance service.”

The man has been taken to Addenbrooke’s Hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The A5 remains closed between the B450 at Kensworth and the A505 junction while recovery work is carried out.

Any witnesses are asked to contact police on 101.
