Network managers SGN say its engineers worked throughout the night in freezing temperatures after 750 homes across the Billington Park and Sandhills area were affected on one of the coldest nights of the winter so far.

A spokesman said: “Our engineers turned off everyone’s gas supply at the meter, which was necessary for safety reasons. The local network is the responsibility of GTC however we are providing the emergency response for them.

“After further checks, we are now starting to revisit properties to reconnect supplies. It is very important that residents do not try to use gas until we have called at your home to carry out our checks and relight your boiler.

“We have drafted in extra resources to help with the restoration process and work will continue through today. As we work to reconnect properties, we would like to ask all customers to check in on older relatives and friends whose supply has been affected.”

Residents with any questions can visit SGN’s customer service team’s incident van stationed at Astral Park Sports and Community Centre in Johnson Drive. You can also ring the 24-hour incident line on 0800 912 1717.
