Business in Bedfordshire is getting better all the time, a local leader told a gathering at Wrest Park, Silsoe, yesterday (Thursday).

Rod Calvert, chairman of Bedfordshire Chamber of Commerce, stood on a spiral staircase to address Chamber members and tell them things are on the up.

Mr Calvert urged business leaders to be confident in the future and said: “It’s not bad out there, it’s getting better all the time. So opportunities are out there for expansion.”

Mr Calvert lambasted certain sections of the media for the way the economy was reported. He said some seemed to be upset that revised official figures showed that Britain did not enter into a triple dip recession.

He added that the government had money to invest in firms. “There’s lots of money around to help,” he said.

In particular he pointed to apprenticeships as a great way of companies investing in the future.

As if to reinforce his point, Keren Wilkins of Ampthill-based defence firm Lockheed Martin, said the company was hiring and also looking to work with local supplier companies.

“For anyone with friends or family looking for employment opportunities, we are hiring.”

Lockheed Martin sponsored the Chamber’s summer reception and Keren is also a member of the organisation’s board of directors.
