Another key win as Leighton march on

Paul Reed says Saturday’s 2-0 win over Leverstock Green ‘wasn’t pretty’ as his Leighton Town side maintained their title push last weekend.

The victory kept the Reds six points clear at the top of the SPL Division One Central standings, ahead of Tuesday night’s (March 17) game with Barton Rovers, played after this week’s Observer went to press.

And speaking to the club’s media after the game, Reed felt it was a deserved win even if not one that was pleasing on the eye, Sydney Ibie seeing an early penalty save but Sam McLelland and Godlove Oppong’s late strike sealing the points.

He said: “It wasn’t pretty, nor the best footballing display from either team, but saying that I felt we missed so many chances - we hit the woodwork a few times, and had shots off the line.

"So as much as it was frustrating in terms of the quality of our performance – technically I thought we were nowhere near as good as we can be – I always felt we were in control aside from a couple of moments in the second-half where we had a wobble and had to put bodies on the line to keep it at 1-0.

"We knew how they would set up as we’d watched their game on Tuesday and that they’d try and sit off and try and defend their half of the pitch well and hit us where they can.

"Goals change games and if the penalty goes in and you get another soon after then it’s a much more comfortable feeling about the day, but 1-0 is a scoreline where you’re always looking over your shoulder and it didn’t need to be as hard as it was today.

"We’ve been the catalysts of that but on another day we put away four of those chances like we have done this season where we’ve hit fives and sixes.”

Following Tuesday’s game, attention will then turn to a trip to Enfield on Saturday before returning home once more to take on Northwood next Tuesday night – both of those opponents struggling in the relegation zone.
