Downey’s delight as Town win

LEIGHTON TOWN returned to winning ways at Bell Close on Saturday but an injury to Uxbridge keeper Sam Mazurek tainted their 2-1 win.

After losing heavily at Hitchin Town in midweek, manager Sean Downey decided to make three changes to his side that went down 5-0 in Hertfordshire.

The visitors were dealt an early blow when keeper Mazurek collided with James Hatch - resulting in a dislocated knee and a lengthy delay in play as an ambulance was called and the unfortunate Uxbridge man was sent to hospital.

Leighton took the lead in the 33rd minute when Jake Bewley lofted a free kick towards goal from distance and the ball went straight over the deputy keeper’s head and into the net.

Kevin Marsh made a couple of excellent saves to prevent Uxbridge drawing level just before the break, with the visitors feeling they were denied a penalty after a scramble close to goal.

Within two minutes of the restart, Farrell scored for Uxbridge after some poor defensive work by Leighton had given him the opening.

But it did not take long for Leighton to regain the lead. Ben Gallant and Hatch were working hard in attack, and in the 65th minute, Gallant held off a challenge to fire low into the net from close range after some good work by Hatch.

Town also had a great chance to seal the win in the 73rd minute but after receiving a pass from Hatch, Gallant placed his shot inches wide of the post.

Keeper Marsh was twice called upon in the dying minutes to make good saves to preserve Leighton’s lead as the visitors sought an equaliser.

Town secured all three points after the full-time whistle, but the visitors will claim that they deserved at least a point for their efforts.

Leighton sit 10th in the Zamaretto League Division One Central, while Uxbridge sit in the bottom three.

Sean Downey will be pleased with the result, but he will know that they face another difficult game at sixth-placed Aylesbury on Tuesday night and will be looking for another typically gritty performance from his team.
