Former Hatters boss Kinnear back at Newcastle

Hugely popular ex-Luton Town boss Joe Kinnear appears to have returned to Newcastle United as director of football.

The 66-year-old, who managed the Toon during the 2008-2009 season, told Sky Sports News: “The deal is absolutely done.

“I signed the deal with owner Mike Ashley on Sunday. I intend to meet Alan Pardew this week.”

Kinnear enjoyed great success at Kenilworth Road between February 2001 and May 2003 and was sacked in mysterious circumstances much to the anger of the Hatters faithful.

Heart problems caused him to step aside as Newcastle manager in February 2009 and his new role will focus on player recruitment.

He added: “I’m a very good judge of player and a good tactician.

“Anything to do with football, I’ve been involved in. I intend to make Newcastle far better than they are now.

“I see a good player and know a good player. I have no other agenda. If I see players at the club right now and don’t think they are good enough I intend to move them on.

“I’m not picking the team. I’m there solely to make sure he gets the best possible team on the pitch.”
