Parma brings back memories

PLAYING against Parma brought back happy memories of facing Ajax as a 17-year-old for Keith Keane, writes Mark Wood.

The combative Luton midfielder believes the Italians were every inch as good as the Dutch masters and got a kick out of both games, despite the fact they ended in defeat.

Keane recalled the game back in 2004, saying: “I started right-back – that was some experience. I was only 17 and it was the hardest game I’ve played in in my life. I’m only saying that because I was inexperienced. I’ve gained some experience and I know when to go and do stuff and not do stuff. It (Parma) was just as hard and just as good. I found it a bit easier because I’ve played more games.

“It brought back good memories. When you play football you want to play against the best players because it’s totally different from watching telly. You realise how good they really are. It’s just a great experience.”

He was disappointed to miss out on Argentine legend Hernan Crespo’s shirt which would have complemented the one he got from Javier Mascherano when Luton played Liverpool.

Keane revealed: “I tried to grab Crespo’s, but I think Deano (Dean Beckwith) had asked before the game started so there was no chance.

“It was a good experience. It’s always good to play against some of the best players in the world. There were some great players and it was a really good experience.”

Town started really well and maybe deserved more than their 2-0 defeat, although Keane admitted it was an eye-opener to discover just how good the top stars can be up close and personal. He said: “They must have started slow. I thought we started really well, apart from the goal against us. It just shows you how you have to stay switched on.

“You can’t make mistakes or you will get punished. But the second half came and they started to turn it on. We found it difficult to get near them. But that’s how it should be. That’s why they are where they are and we are where we are. First half I thought we played some really good football and had the edge – some really good positives.”

And Keane is now eager for the new campaign to start, adding: “It’s been good. I’ve liked it. We got the balls out straight away. I’m feeling quite fit and ready for the season now.”
