Title-winners Leighton end on a high

Paul Reed again hailed his championship-winning Leighton Town side after they ended the season in style last weekend.

The 5-0 win over London Lions not only saw the Reds complete the season unbeaten at home, but also saw them end the season with 109 league goals, 100 points and finishing eight points clear of Hitchin Town.

Kyal Williams, Sam McLelland, Sydney Ibie, BJ Christie and Tolu Ikuyinminu got the goals and Reed told the club’s media he was delighted to finish on a high as Leighton lifted the SPL Division One Central trophy in front of 900 people at the Freed Veneers Community Stadium.

He said: “I’m really pleased. We said last week that we’d rotate things and give boys who have been patient all season some valuable minutes, and today the target was to end the season with 100 points and to maintain our standards despite everything going on.

"So that was another big milestone for our football club and also to finish with 17 clean sheets as well was a big factor.

"We dominated the game from start to finish and at half-time we could have been five or six ahead, and then the second-half was really about just seeing it out.

"Ultimately we knew there was more going on than the football itself and I’m really proud of how the club has conducted itself and how it’s all been put on as it was a brilliant occasion for us.

"We haven’t arrived late to this title push, we’ve been there all season and carried the momentum from last season through the summer into the new campaign, and we are thoroughly deserving champions in my opinion and I’m so proud of the players and the club.

"We’re not the biggest club in the world but there are things here that other clubs haven’t got and are a million miles away from, and that’s the people.

The Division One Central play-offs will see Biggleswade FC host Biggleswade Town and Hitchin Town welcome Thame United on Wednesday night (27th) with the final taking place on Bank Holiday Monday.

Relegated are Enfield, Northwood, Rayners Lane and AFC Dunstable, although AFC Dunstable are folding in the summer due to a merger with Dunstable Town.
