Autism Bedfordshire gets new ‘neighbourly’ grant from Stagecoach

A community organisation in Bedfordshire, which aims to help people with autism, has been given a cash boost by Stagecoach.

Stagecoach has given a grant of £500 to Autism Bedfordshire, an independent charity which works to improve the quality of life for autistic children, young people and adults and their families.

Autism is a lifelong condition but the quality of life for each person can be greatly improved with the right care and support. The earlier that appropriate support can be given, the better the lifelong outcomes for each person and consequently, their families. Autistic people can develop their skills, explore interests, improve physical health and improve social interaction and, in many cases, can find employment.

National figures indicate that autism affects at least one person in every 100. The 2011 Census figures for Bedfordshire indicated that there were 615,100 people in the county, so, based on these figures, there are likely to be well over 6,000 autistic people in Bedfordshire alone.

Darren Roe, Managing Director of Stagecoach East, said: “We are so proud to support organisations that are making a real, tangible difference to people's lives. Giving back to the communities we serve is at the heart of what we do, and it is inspiring to see the incredible work that is being done by Autism Bedfordshire.

“We look forward to seeing the positive impact of this grant, and continuing to support local causes which align with our mission to create more inclusive and sustainable communities.”

Sarah Robinson, Funding Manager for Autism Bedfordshire, added: “This award from the Stagecoach Giving For Good Community Fund means so much to our 'My Future' programme. It helps us create safe, supportive spaces where autistic young adults can connect, develop independence and enjoy new experiences together. We’re thankful for the recognition and support of our work.”
