Central Beds Council Leader Column: Big decisions that need your views
Really important decisions affecting our towns and villages are under consideration right now, and it's important we all get involved and make a real difference.
One such project is now in its final stages. East West Rail is carrying out its last public consultation on its route plans before applying for approval to begin construction.

These proposals include the latest updates to the route, where stations will be located, which existing stations may close, and if level crossings will remain open or be permanently shut.
East West Rail will eventually link Oxford and Cambridge and includes upgrading the Bedford–Bletchley line, which runs through several Bedfordshire villages. There will also be a new section of railway between Bedford and Cambridge, with implications for large parts of East Bedfordshire. For some communities this may bring opportunities; for others it will raise concerns about disruption, accessibility and long-term change. All of those views deserve to be heard.
Some of the proposed changes are also linked to wider developments, including the planned Universal Studios theme park. It is good to see that concerns about pressure on the local road network are being recognised, with a clear expectation that visitors can travel by rail.
At the same time, the Government has recently proposed changes to the Planning system which could remove important local protection. If approved, many applications for developments would be decided solely by planning officers rather than being considered in public by elected councillors on the council’s Development Management Committee.
This would represent a significant loss of local democratic oversight. Public committee meetings allow residents to see decisions being debated, to understand different viewpoints and, crucially, to feel confident that their voices have been heard. I will strongly oppose these changes.
These two issues may seem separate, but they are linked by a common theme. Decisions about infrastructure and development have long-lasting consequences.
Our voices count – but only if we use them. The East West Rail proposals will affect many parts of Central Bedfordshire. I urge everyone affected to take part, ask questions and make their views known. https://eastwestrail.co.uk/consultation/consultation2026
