Faith Matters: The good news in our town

One of the fascinating features of Christianity is the way in which it takes root in a particular place. The Gospel message is good news, which  is shaped by its context. So the language used by the church is not the same in England as it is in Scotland, Sweden or Senegal. Those who want to share the Gospel need to find ways to let the message of good news speak to their audience. So how does the Christian faith find expression in Leighton Linslade?

Some of our townsfolk need to feel safe and have a place to sleep. Some need food for themselves and their family. Some worry about their children, and if there will be help when they are ill. Some are lonely. If you were asked ‘What is good news for you?’, what might you answer?

One of the key features of the life of Jesus was his healing ministry. So health and healing in our town must be one aspect of the Gospel. Jesus had a concern for the poor and the marginalised. So services to help those in need are also essential to Christian life. Jesus regarded peace-making as something characteristic of God’s children. He also brought hope to those who were oppressed and suffering injustice. His followers should  be people who are against war and who work for justice and peace. These should be the ways in which the Gospel is known in our town as in every town.

One of our churches has a justice and peace group which has just celebrated its 30th  anniversary. Alongside other churches and community groups it also offers practical help to those who are hungry and desperate for help. Much of this is practised quietly and without fanfare. A recent report highlighted how churches are providing such essential services in every part of the country.

The Church wants to learn what the needs are in our town, so it can speak and practice good news in our local context.
