'Make the right call': Beds Police warning of antisocial behaviour spike this Halloween and Bonfire season

Police are urging people to "make the right call" this Halloween and Bonfire season as they prepare for "an anticipated rise" in anti-social behaviour.

The force is experiencing "high levels of demand", with call volumes remaining high beyond the traditionally busy summer period and exceeding those recorded during the same period last year.

People are asked to consider "the most appropriate reporting route" before contacting police – and to act responsibly when out and about.

Superintendent Corina House said: “999 should only be used in an emergency. For non-emergencies, our online reporting forms, webchat service and 101 service are all still available 24/7.

“Some issues may also not require police involvement at all – for example, complaints about noise or minor neighbour disputes may be better directed to your local council, housing association or another appropriate agency."

Additional police resources will be dedicated to patrolling busy areas over Halloween and Bonfire Night.

And Beds Police says its Force Control Room will continue to prioritise those in urgent need, with emergency calls "currently being answered within 10 seconds".

Superintendent House added: “We’re also asking people to think about how their behaviour might affect others, and remember that what may seem like harmless fun to one person could be frightening, intimidating or distressing to someone else – particularly vulnerable members of our communities.

“Whether it’s respecting those who choose not to take part in Halloween activities, using fireworks legally and safely, or taking a moment to consider the most appropriate reporting channel or agency to contact, everyone can play a part in helping to keep Bedfordshire safe – and ensuring our resources are available for those who need them most.”

The appeal coincides with International Control Room Week (October 26 to November 1), which recognises the vital work of the call handlers, radio agents and other control room staff.

Halloween top tips

Bedfordshire Police say: “Remember to respect others and do not cause damage to someone else’s property.

“If you are planning a night out, remember that alcohol is never an excuse for antisocial or violent behaviour.

Contact police online at beds.police.uk/ro/report or call 101 with any concerns – and report antisocial behaviour here.

They added: “Please only call 999 if it’s an emergency or a crime is in progress.

"Hoax calls can impact on our ability to service those with a genuine need.”

Fireworks top tips

Bedfordshire Police says: “You cannot buy fireworks if you’re under 18. Underage sale operations occur and traders risk losing their firework licences if caught selling to anyone under 18.

"It’s against the law for anyone to set off fireworks during ‘night-time hours’ except on certain occasions such as Bonfire Night (November 5) and particular cultural celebrations including Diwali. More information here.

"Used irresponsibly, fireworks can cause damage to property and do significant harm to people and animals. Not only is there a danger from fireworks exploding, they can also pose a serious fire risk as well.”
