Leighton's library users fined thousands

A whopping £17,000 worth of fines were paid by users of Leighton Buzzard Library during the 2015-16 financial year.

A report going to Central Beds Council’s overview and scrunity committee on August 18 reveals that the council received £38,304 income from the Lake Street-based library in the 12 months.

As well as the fines, £4,800 of the income figure came from audio visual hire.

Leighton Buzzard’s figure for fines is by far the highest in Central Bedfordshire, beating Dunstable (£11,500 ) and Houghton Regis (£4,100) combined.

Flitwick had £8,800 fines and Ampthill £3,600.

Central Beds charges adults 26p per day for each late item up to a maximum of £7.80 (five weeks).

For children the daily charge is 7p, up to a maximum of £2.10. Concessions are charged 13p per day up to £3.90.

A lost adult library ticket costs £1.50 to replace.
